Ambrose Bierce wrote in several genres and used several different methods to deliver his stories. While he is most famous for his short stories and poems, "Fantastic Fables" collects hundreds of parables that parody the Aesop's own fables.This book is not going to satisfy those who have read Bierce's short fiction or his infamous "Devil's Dictionary" because these bits of fiction (sometimes little more than few sentences) often times have meaning that is tied to the social climate of his era, including politics, mores and foibles that don't translate to 2014. Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty that remains true today as it was in Bierce's day, but there are times that one might find themselves scratching their head instead of laughing. Th humor isn't always uproarious either; sometimes the intent to to get a loud "Guffaw" in lieu of laughter.
All those trepidation aside, this book is sensational humor and a treat for those that love a little derision that skewers popular literature and American culture in one stroke that only a master could produce. If you're on the fence, look into "The Sardonic Wit of Ambrose Bierce" for some samples of these parables.

This book stands with the Devil's Dictionary and In the Midst of Life as one of Ambrose Bierce's finest achievements. Dozens and dozens of short - sometimes very short - fables, each one a small, sharp needle in the backside of respectable hypocrisy. Some are simply written-out jokes, like the one about the baby ostrich who swallowed a bottle-cap ("Go quickly, my child, and swallow a corkscrew", says its mother); but the best of them to my mind are those featuring metaphors or abstract concepts as characters, like the one about the Moral Principle and the Temporary Expedient which met on a narrow bridge one day with predictably humiliating results. All the usual suspects are here - corrupt politicians, pious hypocrites, daffy judges and members of the Women's Press Association snarl, whimper, wheedle, preach, cheat and sneak alongside various Pairs of Hands making unauthorised incursions into Treauries, Streaks of Lightning failing to match the speed of Politicians Running for Office, and Blotted Escutcheons doing what Blotted Escutcheons do. Readers of the Devil's Dictionary, with its numerous improving anecdotes and rhymes, will know what to expect; anyone else is in for a treat, or possibly a coronary.
Good book.
Nowhere in the product description does it say that this is Volume 5; Black Beetles in Amber. I bought the book because I thought it was a collection of Bierce's short stories, which I've read once before and greatly enjoyed. I won't be returning the book, as I'm interested in reading some of Bierce's poetry, but I am slightly disappointed that I didn't know this was only volume 5.
Aesops's Fables have been around for at least 2,500 years, and are as valid today as they were in ancient times. However, this collection of modern fables, the product of the sardonic wit of the incomparable Ambrose Bierce, undoubtedly will be good for at least 2,500 more. The perfect companion volume to Bierce's "The Devil's Dictionary".
Bierce at his best.
Very good. I enjoy reading Bierce. I like short stories, tales, -some of Bierce's are not merely short, but very, very short. He has a sardonic sense of humor, one might take him to be a misanthrope, and some of his tales have a twist like a corkscrew. Some of his stories end abruptly- as a bullet or cannon ball putting an end to it mid-sentence.
Bierce is one of my favorite authors. This collection shows the gamut of his work from the the 'merely very good' to the outstanding. Be sure to read a decent biography of him to get the full measure of the man and the writer.
