This short story, set in 1879 San Francisco, features two elderly dressmakers, Miss Minnie and Miss Millie Moffet, who face a moral dilemma of no small dimensions. They turn for advice to Annie Fuller, a widowed boardinghouse owner who supplements her income as a clairvoyant, Madam Sibyl.
For those who have read any of Locke's USA Today bestselling Victorian San Francisco mysteries, this story is set after Maids of Misfortune and before Uneasy Spirits and is an amusing glimpse into the lives of Annie Fuller's two most eccentric boarders. For those unfamiliar with Locke's mysteries and the late 19th century world they portray, this is just a taste of things to come.

The Misses Moffet Mend A Marriage Victorian San Francisco Stories Book 3 eBook M Louisa Locke

Much to the distress of Nate Dawson, the Moffet sisters have been permanent fixtures of Annie Fuller's boarding house since its introduction in Maids of Misfortune. However, despite their constant presence, we readers haven't been privy to much of their story or character. Locke remedies this in her delightful short, The Misses Moffet Mend a Marriage.

First of all, I love that these two elderly women are so much more perceptive than people give them credit for. As unmarried ladies of a certain age, they are assumed to be naive in and uninterested in the workings of the world. The revelation is almost surprising to their young landlord but I found it highly amusing.

On the same note, I love how these seemingly sheltered ladies handle a rather delicate situation. Where most would run, wild-eyed, fingers raised in accusation, the Misses Moffet play old school. Their tactics are subtle, but infinitely more effective and less damaging than an open confrontation of the issue. It is a skill that has sadly fallen by the wayside in my opinion.

As always I am delighted with Locke's work. Short but sweet and more than worth looking in to.

The Misses Moffet Mend A Marriage Victorian San Francisco Stories Book 3 eBook M Louisa Locke Reviews

Her novels are meals. In every sense of the word. Rich, multi-ingredients, filling!!! I've now read all the 'offerings,' Louisa Locke has available. The short stories are like sweets she offers to complement the novels. I didn't like this one as much as "Dandy,' as it didn't feel as fleshed out, I can't say I didn't like it. I love her characters, so of course, I liked it. I just wish it was just a little bit longer. But that was the ONLY thing I didn't LOVE.
I've loved these stories in the Victorian San Francisco series. The characters are engaging and the plots are a fun escape. Well done!
I've read all of Locke's published books and short stories. She continues to keep you in suspense with this short story involving the Moffet sisters, who are boarders at Annie Fuller's boarding house. It's fun to read and watch these elderly ladies solve a mystery and discreetly let the "villain" know what they know. The window dressing on this story, and in her books, is her knowledge of the period she writes about in intricately describing rooms, clothing and the manners and proprieties of the 1870s. I hope Locke continues to write books and stories involving Annie Fuller and her boarders.
Two little old ladies, who live in Annie Fuller's boarding house are dressmakers of the highest degree. When they are making a dress for a very pregnant young client, suspicions are stirred up when they suspect her husband may be heading for trouble. Another one of their clients is a very clever woman, she excels at gathering young men into her grasp. How can the two sisters Moffett stop this before someone is really hurt.
This is a quick but fun read. An offshoot of the Victorian San Francisco stories, it is worth saving as a quick read while waiting at the dentist's office. It will definitely distract from any worries you might have, & keep you happily entertained.
I loved this short story. I am a big fan of Ms. Locke's books and this added alot of fun background to her engaging stories. I especially enjoyed this book as my great-grandmother lived in San Francisco about a decade after the time these stories were set and she was a seamstress. If you love San Francisco and would enjoy an historical setting that transports you to another time, then I highly recommend this as well as the other novels and short stories by this fine author. I learned much about a city I lived in for a few years and came to appreciate the era this was set in.The Misses Moffet Mend A Marriage A Victorian San Francisco Story
I am a big fan of M Louisa Locke's books and of all the short stories she has written to accompany her Victorian San Francisco Mystery series, this is my favorite. The Misses Moffet are two of my favorite supporting players, and this story really gives them a chance to shine in their quirky intuitiveness. And it gives us a little more insight into who they are as characters, along with their personal history. Like all her other entries in this series, she skillfully delivers a rich historical context without it feeling like an information dump or veering off from the main focus of the narrative. Very likeable, interesting characters throughout. I would compare this particular story to something akin to a Miss Marple story. The mystery is not gruesome or bloody and its solving relies more on the keen intelligence, abilities of observation and a good dose of intuition on the part of the Misses. It also concerns itself with the everyday type of activities of women, which, as a social history buff, I love insight into those things. Great short story.
